Nintendo has announced that it will take the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection offline on May 20th, permanently disabling the online features of a huge number of games on DS and Wii games.

Over 60 titles will lose their online multiplayer support, including two much-loved Animal Crossing titles: the DS’ Wild World, and the Wii’s Let’s Go to the City/City Folk. Sure, we have New Leaf now but it’s still sad that these games will, effectively, be forever broken in just a few months.

Speaking to EuroGamer, a Nintendo spokesperson said, “As of May 20, 2014, certain online functionality, including online play, matchmaking and leaderboards for many Wii, Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi games, will no longer be accessible. Users can still play these games in offline mode which continues to offer a rich game-play experience. Other online functionality on Wii and Nintendo DS, such as access to the Wii Shop Channel, the Nintendo DSi Shop and video-on-demand services, are also not affected at this time.”

For a full list of games that will lose their online functionality, see the respective UK and US pages.

What are your thoughts? Do you care, or did you abandon your old Animal Crossing towns long ago?
